I've been in my current position for a year now and I've gotten a great review from my boss. I'm a really hard worker and go above and beyond etc etc.. Here's my dilemma, my boss is nice as long as you do as she says etc etc, but she's also very vindictive when she doesn't get her way. I'm looking to move to Florida however I'm wondering as to whether or not I should put her down as a reference? Two people have already left and she totally turned on them when they told her they were moving onto another job. Her attitude completely changed and gave them horrible references just because they were leaving. My question is, 1) Is that even legal? 2) How do I explain to a potential employer that the reason I don't want to put her as a reference is because she has a tendency of being vindictive because ppl decide to move on to better things. She's been with this company forever %26amp; she figures everyone should be the same way.. What should I do?Here's my dilemma.. any advice would be appreciated?
If you have worked at other jobs, use them for references, and when you give your notice where you work now, explain to your employer that you are moving for personal reasons and would she kindly give you a letter of reference. That way she has little time yo react and you have the letter in your hand before you leave. Also I would ask you fellow workers to write a letter of recommendation for you. Here's my dilemma.. any advice would be appreciated?
my suggestion would be to obtain a copy of the good reviews you have from her and include them to any potential employers.... and put her as a reference..... if she talks ill of you...... then they will have documentation (hopefully with a signature or something)..... that they can have hard evidence about you as an employee
My son was pretty much faced with the same problem as you a while back. As far as I am concerned, he found a most interesting way around it. First off what you would need to do is go to this potentially witch of a boss (dont tell her that of course) and lie through your teeth! Go to her and tell her that you are trying to get a personal loan from a family member. Following this? Well at this point, tell her that the family member would like to have a written paper from your boss stating what kind of worker that you are and if your job is secure with the company. Tell her that your family member would like to know how many days were missed in the last year and also if there is any chance that you might be layed off anytime soon. Then ask her to personally sign it with her name and position along with the date. Get where Im going with this? Once that you have this in hand, its the best recomendation that you could have. Make copies of this in the event that you should need more than 1 durring looking for work. Now, when you tell her that you will be relocating, mention to her that it will only be for aproximately 4 months or so and hope that your job will be available when you return. This of course will make her think that at some point she will be getting the return of a good worker. Tell her then that there will be no need for a recomendation letter as you have made copies of the previouse one. This will tell her 2 things: 1) She would look like a fool by giving a bad recomendation after knowing that she has already signed and dated a letter and 2) Legal actions could be taken later should she try to shaft you. This legal action would fall into the slander area.
This worked extremely well for my son. I would hope that it would you too. Good luck!
