Practice, practice, practice. Every day, at least an hour every day.
I hope this helps: Just learn your scales, practice, and make sure you do more than just play at home. Maybe you have something that you can play at to see how good you are like at a Solo and Ensemble festival. You play a piece of music, and they score you. It helps you play in front of people and you get better. Scales are the basics of music, so it definitly helps to know them. And practice can make you much better no matter how hard the music is.
Start out with the SOFTEST reed you can get.
That will allow you to get a reasonable tone %26amp; learn the finger placements.
As you progress, move to a stiffer one.
