I am putting a ceiling fan in place of a light, I need advice on support.?

In the attic were the box is, it is secured (the box) by a skinny metal rod that runs between the studs. This house was built in 1950. Is it possible that the skinny meatl rod is strong enough to hold the fans weight, or was it meant for just the weight of a light?I am putting a ceiling fan in place of a light, I need advice on support.?
See the staff at home depot lighting department, there is a support bar that can be installed in between the joists it is expandable and if you remove the electrical box it can be slipped into the hole, assembled and installed without damaging the drywall. Just tell the staff what your doing and they 'll show you how it's installed. Good Luck!

P.S. Dont forget to turn the power off!I am putting a ceiling fan in place of a light, I need advice on support.?
They do make brackets that will support the weight and screw into the studs. Check with a home supply company or check with a lighting/fan supply company.
DO NOT hang the fan from the metal rod, put in a 2x4 brace between the joist do not forget to recess it a bit so the box does not hang below the ceiling and your fan will fit flush
